5 New Ways to Use Pumpkins on your Porch

Uncommon, Interesting and Cool

Frankly, pumpkins are pretty perfect just the way they are. It’s hard to improve on a gourd that reaches peak color when everything else is fading and comes with its own handle.

But that doesn’t mean we can’t get creative about how we display them, especially from year to year. We found this to be true as our kids got older and went from watching us carve to creating masterpieces of their own.

1) The Pumpkin Drill

Sure, you can carve your pumpkin and put a candle or battery-powered light inside. But have you ever made a pumpkin lantern with a drill and lots of tiny holes?

You’ll still cut a hole around the stem to clean out the pumpkin and eventually insert your light source. Then for the more mature pumpkin carvers in the crowd, grab your household drill and any size drill bit—or mix it up with multiple sizes—to create a pumpkin that resembles a beautiful old tin lantern.

2) Pumpkin Cutters

Grab your favorite cookie cutters (or pick up a couple new fall or themed cutters) and a rubber mallet. Place the cutter where you want it, then gently tap evenly until it falls inside the pumpkin.

Remove, reposition and repeat!

3) The Most Sincere Pumpkin Patch

Linus was definitely on to something. Create your own mini pumpkin patch by using inexpensive, mid-sized pie pumpkins and dotting or clustering them throughout a mulch bed or area of groundcover. You could even make or buy a Pumpkin Patch sign.

Then keep an eye out for The Great Pumpkin.

4) Floating Pumpkins

This one requires smaller pumpkins with decent sized stems. Tie twine, festive ribbon or fishing wire to stems and cut at varying lengths. Then secure to a porch ceiling with tacks or clear duct tape or tie from tree branches.

5) Send a Message

Spell out ‘BOO,’ ‘WELCOME,’ ‘ENTER WITH CAUTION’ or any seasonal message by stenciling each pumpkin with one or more letters and lining them up on a porch, along a walkway or across your yard.
